I tried Sinatra after I read RailsSpace and thought, man, I will probably never need most of this, though I'm glad it's around in case I do. I think of Sinatra as a layer on Rack that can do views and things, and that plus plain ruby gets me far enough on the server side. I usually like to use files for storage when I can get away with it anyway (yeah warning not scaleable warning). The online Sinatra book is great too, it had answers to all of my early questions.

Really like Michael's clear writing style (remember reading Railsspace back in 07). Thx for this new resource. Also like the fact that he doesn't use many gems, but discusses building stuff from scratch (regarding Railsspace book).

…p/0321480791 --- ignoring the ones complaining that it's out-of-date :-). To remedy the perennial problem of outdated Rails tutorials, I'm currently working on an online Ruby on Rails tutorial book that will be up-to-date (and easy to update!) by design. It'll be a couple months before I really get cranking, but I expect to be finished with the book by the end of the year. I'm also planning to make an extended screencast series once the book is done. You can follow the project's progress at http://railstutorial.org/ .

Railcasts by Ryan Bates are phenomenal. http://railscasts.com/ I went through this book when I was learning Rails. I liked the fact that by the end, I had accomplished a bunch of things that I knew I would use again and again. http://www.amazon.com/RailsSpace-Building-Networking-Addison... For a have on hand reference: http://www.amazon.com/Rails-Way-Addison-Wesley-Professional-... And a good compilation of beginner resources: http://rushi.wordpress.com/2006/09/24/ruby-on-rails/

Ask HN - Best way to pick new skills What, in your experience is the best way to learn anything new? I'm learning RoR, using Railsspace book. (I'm just taking RoR just as an example, could be anything from programming to cooking) Obviously it would be nice to learn as much as possible in the shortest possible time. I understand that what works for one person might now work for another. Still, it would be interesting to know how the hackers here learn new things.

…ut bears repeating. I still silently curse every site that makes this mistake. I've done my part to fix it, by the way. Here's the introduction to Section 6.5 in my book RailsSpace : 6.5 Friendly URL forwarding There’s one final flourish we’d like to add to our basic login functionality. One of our pet peeves is when we go to the front page of a site, click on a link for a protected page, are prompted to log in, and then get forwarded back to the front page rather than to the protected page we originally requested. This is lame, lame, lame. Obviously, the site should remember the protected page we requested and then forward us there after logging in. Let’s implement (and test) this feature, which we call “friendly forwarding.”

I'd also recommend my book, RailsSpace ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321480791 ), a tutorial introduction to Rails and part of the same Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series as the Ruby & Rails Way books. It's a bit dated in places (damn, Rails moves fast), but is much more pedagogically oriented than the Way books, and hence probably a better place for beginners to start.

…k at RailsSpace, which is an extended tutorial introduction to Rails. As one of the authors, I'm biased, but the Amazon reviews are pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321480791 N.B. As with virtually all Rails books, it's a bit out of date (despite having only just come out last summer!), but we focus on general techniques that are plenty useful in Rails 2. I'm currently building a site with some of the same features as the book application, and I often find myself referring to the book for guidance.
